Carbon Dioxide In The Air At The Peak Level Since Analysis : NOAA
Though there is a massive reduction in commuting as well as commercial activities owing to pandemic lockdowns, the amount of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere in May touched its highest level in modern history, as a global indicator on Monday showed.
According to scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California (UC) San Diego, the results were the highest since measurements started 63 years ago. The findings were based on the amount of carbon in the air at NOAA’s weather station on Mauna Loa in Hawaii.
The measurement, known as the ‘Keeling Curve’ named after scientist Charles David Keeling, who began tracking carbon dioxide back in 1958, is a global standard for carbon levels in the atmosphere.
As per the Instruments on NOAA’s mountaintop observatory, carbon dioxide was recorded at around 419 parts per million last month, greater than the 417 parts per million in May 2020.
As carbon dioxide is the main factor of climate change, lessening the use of fossil fuels, deforestation and other practices that give rise to carbon emissions should be prioritized to avoid disastrous consequences. It was stated Pieter Tans, a scientist with NOAA’s Global Monitoring Laboratory, in a report on the emissions.
“We are increasing approximately 40 billion metric tons of CO2 pollution to the atmosphere every year,” Tans wrote. “It is like a mountain of carbon that we take from the Earth, burn, and release into the atmosphere as CO2 each year.”
According to the report, the amount of carbon in the air today is the same as it was about 4 million years ago when sea level was 78 feet (24 meters) higher than it is now and the average temperature was 7 degrees Fahrenheit greater as compared to before the Industrial Revolution.
Although the world is experiencing the pandemic lockdown on and off since last year, scientists couldn’t see a drop in the overall amount of carbon in the atmosphere partially due to wildfires, which also add carbon, and also the natural behaviour of carbon in the atmosphere, the report stated.
