Trump Holding WHO Funds Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Trump has revealed to the White House that the WHO has failed to do its basic job and has promoted a wider outbreak by promoting “disinformation” about the virus.

US is the biggest owner so far to the Geneva-based WHO contributing $400 million in 2019 which is around 15% of its total budget. Trump had previously expected since Trump had raised his speculations in the past.

Trump has made the announcement to halt the WHO funds and has been facing serious criticism from top health advisers even in the US.  His move according to experts can lead to the discouragement of international cooperation in the combat of the disease.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is also of the view that this is not the time to halt the resources to the body.  “Now is the time for unity and for the international community to work together in solidarity to stop this virus and its shattering consequences,” he said.

American Medical Association President Dr. Patrice Harris has also called Trump’s decision “a dangerous step in the wrong direction that will not make defeating COVID-19 easier” and has suggested reconsidering the decision.
