WHO Launches Initiative to Help 1.3 Billion People Quit Smoking Amid COVID19 Outbreak.

In the midst of the deadly outbreak of coronavirus, the World Health Organisation launches an initiative to help 1.3 billion people around the globe quit smoking.

WHO Director-General Tedros while briefing about the initiative informed, people can have free access to the resources to quit smoking. Such as, they can get free of cost nicotine replacement therapy. As well as free access to the digital health worker for advice.

A report by united nations reveals that every year 8 million people die of smoking. Report also reveals that smokers are more vulnerable and exposed to COVID19 than a non smoker. Therefore, WHO and UN interagency are working together in this initiative to help people quit smoking.

NGO partners such as Tech Industry, Pharmaceutical and PATH are also supporting this initiative. Manufacturing partners Johnson & Johnson Consumer Health said on Friday that it has donated about 40,000 nicotine patches.

Furthermore, WHO is in the last stages of adding more partners in this initiative. It encourages pharmaceutical and tech companies to join the cause.

Tedros informs, initially WHO will launch the initiative in Jordan and over the months it will be rolled out around the world.
