BBC to expand the shortwave radio news coverage in Kashmir after the lockdown in the region by the Indian Government.

The announcement was made after the special status was given to occupied Kashmir through the scrapping of an article in the Indian constitution. The aim of expanding shortwave radio news coverage is to alleviate the intensity of the communication blackout imposed by the Indian government. Shortwave radio transmission has the ability to travel thousands of kilometers in the mountainous regions.

The Top Official of BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) has stated that in current circumstances when there is a shutdown of communication through digital services and phone lines, the right thing to do is to use short wave radio services for the news provision. The main purpose of the BBC World Service is to provide the audience with trusted news.

The BBC News reported that News Hindi radio output will be extended by 30 minutes from Friday. News Urdu will launch a daily program from Monday.

India is BBC radio service largest market, tuned in by 50 million people per week. Short wave transmission will be helpful in a region like Kashmir.
