It has been recommended to update the Whatsapp since a researcher has detected a bug in the acclaimed privacy recommended messenger. This bug can enable hackers to get access to your files and messages through malicious GIFs.
The stem of the danger is a double-free bug (can crash the app and can get access to personal data from phone) which is named Awakened. A malicious GIF is crafted and wait for the user to open the WhatsApp gallery. The attack is only affecting Android phones having software Android 8.1 and 9.0. However, it does not work for Android 8.0 or anything under it.
According to the researcher, the issue has been fixed. To avoid the problem, you have to download the latest version of the messenger Whatsapp.
