Pakistan pledged an amount of $3 million towards SAARC COVID-19 Emergency Fund. This fund was actually the idea of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The Government of Pakistan has pledged US$ 3 million towards the SAARC COVID-19 Emergency Fund to support regional efforts in the fight against Coronavirus,” revealed the Foreign Office. This statement was a followup of the telephonic conversation between Saarc Secretary General, Esala Ruwan Weerakoon and Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood.
This idea of fund was revealed on March 15. India has pledged $10 million, Sri Lanka has pledged $5 million, Bangladesh $1.5m, Nepal and Afghanistan $1m each, Maldives $0.2m and Bhutan $0.1m.
Pakistan was the last country to pledge. This fund which is worth $21.8 will be used to help the pandemic fighting countries.
Pakistan announced the pledge the next day after the regional initiative was proposed by Modi. The intra-trade of the region was discussed in the meeting.
