Senior and renowned lawyer Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan says that it is Prime Minister’s constitutional right to appoint or select Chief of Army Staff.
“This is a principle of the parliamentary sovereignty. The court should not have intervened in the matter. The [Supreme Court] is a respectful institution, but the principle of parliamentary sovereignty is also supreme. However, The Supreme Court (SC) has adjourned a case regarding the extension in Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa’s tenure.
The bench headed by CJP Asif Saeed Khoso took up the hearing. More so, Farogh Naseem, who resigned from his post as law minister yesterday represented COAS.
Naseem will represent the government along with Attorney General (AG) Anwar Mansoor Khan in the case. During the hearing today, the CJP said that the media had reported incorrectly about the top court taking suo motu notice.
