The Indian government has especially allowed the export of anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as announced by the foreign ministry said on Tuesday. This was done on the urge of President Donald Trump who wanted New Delhi to supply the drug which had the potential to treat COVID-19.
India previously had a hold on the export of hydroxychloroquine along with other pain relievers. However, Trump called President Modi to let go of the hold in a response to which the exports will be given a go-ahead.
“It has been decided that India would license paracetamol and hydroxychloroquine in appropriate quantities to all our neighboring countries who are dependent on our capabilities,” said Indian foreign ministry spokesman, Anurag Srivastava.
“We will also be supplying these essential drugs to some nations who have been particularly badly affected by the pandemic,” he said.
Trump regarding the matter said, “I don’t like that decision [to not export the drug]. I didn’t hear that was his [Modi’s] decision.”
If he [Modi] doesn’t allow the supply to come out, that would be okay, but of course, there may be retaliation, why wouldn’t there be?”
However, the government and Trump are heavily criticized for promoting the hydroxychloroquine as the treatment of COVID-19. the doctors and researchers in the US are still of the view that more testing needs to be done to prove the assumption.
Dr. Patrice Harris, the American Medical Association revealed that the drug can cause heart problems. She said, “People have their health to lose…Your heart could stop.”
