1953: Eject Mossadeq
Mohammad Mossadeq, Prime Minister of Iran was ejected by US and British agencies. He was a democratically elected Prime Minister. The leader wanted to nationalize Iran’s oil industry.
1979: The Great Iranian Revolution
The Shah of Iran Mohammad Raza Pahlevi was opposed by many religious and secular leaders who had to leave the country. The rule had to witness strikes and demonstrations by opponents. The Islamic Republic of Iran was proclaimed on April 1.
1979-81: US Embassy Hostage Situation
Protestors in 1979 took over the US embassy and American hostages were held inside for 444 days. There were 52 hostages who were set free at the inauguration of US President Ronal Reagan in January 1981.
1985-1986: US Shipping Weapons To Iran
The US secretly shipped weapons to Tehran in exchange for Iran’s helping them free US hostages in Lebanon held by Hezbollah militants.
1988: the US Shoots Down Iranian Passenger Plane
The US by mistake targets the Iranian passenger plane which had 290 people on board leaving for the pilgrimage to Mecca. They thought it was a fighter jet.
2002: Iran Given The Title Of Axis Of Evil
President George Bush gave a State of the Union Address, he called Iraq, Iran and North Korea “axis of evil” which led to outrage in the country.
All 2000 -2010: Nuclear Watchdog
Iran’s opposition group that nuclear activities were being conducted in the country. It was doubted that the country was making a uranium enrichment plant.
Iran was then accused of having a secret nuclear weapon program which Iran denied. Iran was under the radar of nuclear watchdog by the UN.
Sanctions were implemented on Iran by the UN, US and EU which resulted in currency losing its two-third value in the international market.
2013-2016: Nuclear Deal
Hassan Rouhani, the new president takes the office and has a telephone conversation with President Barack Obama on phone. This was the first time in 30 years both countries have been friendly.
Iran agreed to a long term deal in its nuclear program under which Iran limits the sensitive nuclear activity and allows an international inspector in case they want the lifting of economic sanctions.
2018: Donald Trump abandons the nuclear deal
US President Donald Trump abandons the nuclear deal and restores all the economic sanctions. More so, the US also threatens other countries to abandon Iran’s oil export otherwise the US will do the same. Iran’s economy falls into a major disaster once again.
At the same time, Iran also started a counter-pressure campaign.
2019: The Massive Blame Game
In May and June 2019, six oil tankers exploded in the Gulf of Oman for which the US accused Iran.
After a short while, Iran shots down US military drones over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran said it was over their territory while the US says it was over international waters.
Later, Iran stops following the key commitments of the nuclear deal in July.
2020: Assassination of Qasim Soleimani
Iran’s most respected military commander Gen Qasem Soleimaniis killed by a US drone strike resulting in outrage in the Iranian government and people. Iran vows a ‘severe revenge’.
