Kashmir’s lockdown In August 2019 is not the first chapter of imposed oppression. There can be books written on how India’s army has conducted atrocities to torture the nation.
On August 5, on the order of Prime Minister Narrindera Modi, India surprised the nation with the verdict taking away the right of autonomy which the state of Jammu and Kashmir had in exchange for joining the Indian union back in 1947. More so, the verdict was followed by a lock down, cutting off all the communication lines, restricting any public movement and arresting prominent Kashmiri politicians.
A Brief History
August 5 was not the day when it all started. Kashmiris have been crying for help since 1947. The partitions plan provided in 1947, Indian Independence Act, gave Kashmiris to join India or Pakistan. However, Hari Singh, Dogra ruler at the time, wanted Kashmir to become independent. Kashmir was a Muslim majority area. Still he decided to join the Indian union in 1947.
Hari Singh signed an instrument which declared Kashmir’s autonomy with the first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. This instrument resulted in declaring Kashmir’s autonomy in the Indian Union.
However, India did not have plans to leverage Kashmir’s autonomy. India became a brutal and imperial force that flooded the valley with tyranny.
Pakistan has fought many wars with India since then to claim Kashmir knowing the interests of their Muslim brothers and sisters living in the region. Many Kashmiris have voiced to be seen as an independent state.
Indians have done everything they can to oppress the Kashmiris voicing their message across the world starting from physical torture, murders, rape, fake encounters to twisting facts and figure on the international platforms. Fake killings of pandits have been reported by major news sharing platforms.
The Revoking of Article 370
It was only after the lock down, UN took the notice of the atrocities being conducted in the region. Though Pakistan has raised the matter a number of times on different international podiums but no constructive progress was seen.
Since the revoking of Article 370, Pakistan has cut down all the road links with India. More so, it has banned all the Indian movies from Pakistani cinemas. Pakistan also suggested the matter to be taken to the International Court of Justice at The Hague. Pakistan also denied Narindara Modi using their airspace since he was violating human rights in Kashmir.
More so, Pakistan has been able to gain the support of China, Malaysia and Turkey for the issue. The representatives of the country have openly criticized Indian action on international gatherings.
On October 29, 2019 UN office also made a statement about their concerns of India violating the human rights in Kashmir. More so, the Supreme Court of India also declared the communication lockdown to be unconstitutional.
Narindara Modi has criticized Pakistan and has accused the country of using the special staus against the interests of India. He said, Pakistan has been using Kashmir “as a weapon to incite people of the region against India”, he added: “I have complete faith under this new system we all will be able to free Jammu and Kashmir of terrorism and separatism.”
UN has had two meetings in the past to discuss the atrocities in Kashmir. However, India and Pakistan have been instructed by UN on numerous occasions to sort the issue out.
Kashmir Solidarity Day in Pakistan (Today)
Pakistani government has passed a resolution in order to support Kashmiri people fighting for their right of self-determination. The resolution also asked Indian to take a note of their brutal actions and focus on the issue.
“This House pays glowing tributes to the sacrifices rendered by the Kashmiri people for their right to self-determination,” the resolution said.
Pakistan has been celebrating this day since 1990 but the enthusiasm witnessed this year was extra ordinary. Pakistanis have high hopes like their Kashmiri brothers and sisters that they will have the independence one day.
