Shafqat Mehmood, Federal Minister of Education has revealed that the new social media bill is under discussion. Shafqat Mehmood made this announcement about The Citizens Protection (Against Online Harm) Rules, 2020 on Geo News talk show Capital Talk.
He said, “The bill is not finalized yet, meetings are being conducted to discuss it further. The meetings will amend the issued notification.” He clearly said, “The act is being revised.”
The law made a compulsion for all the social media companies to register and open offices in Pakistan. However, the law did not receive a positive response. Alice Welles, of the US State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, expressed her concern saying the law ” could be a setback to freedom of expression & development of the digital economy.”
However, the government will still regulate social media companies. Special Assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan has made it clear that social media companies will not operate without any assistance.
“We cannot leave these websites completely unregulated,” she had said. “These laws have been made to facilitate social media.” Even with the changes, the bill is going to affect a number of social media companies
