According to market tracker app Annie, TikTok was the world’s most downloaded app in 2020, replacing Facebook and its messaging platform.

TikTok, owned by China-based ByteDance, is a video-sharing-focused social networking service. The social media platform is used to make a variety of short-form videos, from genres like dance, comedy, and education, that have a duration from fifteen seconds to three minutes.

In 2020, Facebook Messenger dropped from first place to fifth, Facebook itself remained second, while WhatsApp came in third, and Instagram is in the fourth number.

All of the social media platforms on the list apart from Tiktok belong to Us Facebook corporation.

As concern for personal privacy grows, Telegram, a messaging app that can delete posts, also ranked high during a year when social media use has been driven up by the COVID-19 pandemic.

TikTok's popularity has prompted Facebook-owned Instagram to add video features to ride the hot trend.
