The Egyptian startup Swvl, which has been successful in Pakistan, is now focusing on other countries which include the Philippines, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. Since the launch in Pakistan, the headquarters moved to Dubai.
“By the end of next year, we want to be in more cities, a city is a market for us. We are planning to open in Manila, Jakarta, and Dhaka,” Shahzeb Memon, Swvl Pakistan’s General Manager.
The company has raised funds of $80 million so far from different cities of Pakistan. These cities include Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi. The startup plans to invest an amount of $25 million in the country and create 10,00 jobs. More so, it also aims to attract half a million customers by 2021.
The company does face regulatory hurdles.
The provincial government has already issued a notice against them saying that Swvl does not have a permit for routes.
However, Swvl has defended saying that it started the business with all the necessary lawful obligations.
The Swvl service is 30-40% cheaper than the car service.
