World Bank to Provide Rs. 33bn Relief Package to help Pakistan in Fight Against COVID19.

The World Bank is ramping up its support to Pakistan and its people to fight the spread of COVID-19 in the country. PREP will help strengthen the country’s capacity to detect and monitor the disease. Illango Patchamuthu, World Bank Country Director for Pakistan.

The world bank on Thursday has approved $200 Million relief package under fast track support program. The aim is to help Pakistan to take effective measures in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

$200 million will support Pakistan’s preparedness and emergency response in the health sector. It also includes social protection and education measures to help the poor and vulnerable cope with the immediate impacts of the pandemic. World bank

However, WB informed, this support will also draw an extra $38 million from eight existing projects. The projects will support federal and provincial governments in purchasing necessary equipment and supplies.

Moreso, WB has launched the Pandemic Response Effectiveness Project (PREP). It aims to help poor and vulnerable cope with the immediate impact of the pandemic. Also, project will provide social protection measures, food rations, and remote learning education.

A statement issued by world read the following;

In Pakistan, the Bank’s support will be crucial to making remote learning available for 50 million children whose schools are closed.  The emergency financing here will also enable basic food to reach 40,000 people whose movement will be restricted for up to 6 months. And, it will train health workers to watch for and help prevent gender-based violence in households under quarantine. world bank
