Government of Pakistan Successful in Negotiating With Twitter

200 accounts in Pakistan were suspended two months back for posting content about the recent Kashmir issues. The government of Pakistan has taken steps in negotiating this matter with the micro-blogging websites.

In August, many Pakistani twitter users were posting about India’s lockdown in Kashmir. Most of these users were journalists, activists, government officials, and military fans tweeting for the freedom of Kashmir. In response to the suspension of accounts, hashtag #StopSuspendingPakistanis circulated on Twitter in Pakistan and was one of the top trends.

The government of Pakistan accused Twitter of aiding the Indian agenda to silent the matter of the Kashmir lockdown. Few of the suspended accounts were also owned by government officials.

In order to negotiate, a letter was written to Twitter’s vice president, Del Harvey, from National IT Board chairman Shahbat Ali Shah in which highlighted that accounts were suspended without any warning notice. He requested the twitter official to provide the evidence of any aggressive content before suspending the posting account. Furthermore, a request for verification of government account was made.

Mr. Shah tweeted on October 9, 2019, that Twitter has agreed to the suggestion. They will not suspend government verified accounts without any prior notice or warning. However, this implies to few special verified accounts.
