An infant girl dies at the largest children’s hospital in Sindh when an incubator caught fire at Karachi’s Institute of Child Health.
The fire was caused by a short circuit in the incubator. Saddar SHO Arshad Afridi said that they were not reported about the incident as reported in Dawn. However, they did check the cause of the fire and identified it.
More so, he also confirmed that the newborn died because of the fire. She died because of the smoke and suffocation when the incubator caught fire because of the faulty incubator. The victim’s family also took the body home without police letting police complete the investigation process.
A senior police officer also confirmed that the baby died because of the suffocation. An internal inquiry is being conducted to find the root reason.
The short circuit in the incubator put the whole surgical ward at risk. Patients in the surgical ward were evacuated on time but the newborn was not able to survive.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has asked for a report for the executive director explaining the incident. An inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incident. The committee has been asked to compile the inquiry report in the next three days.
