To facilitate better communication to the mountaineers and trekkers, a 4G BaseTransceiver Station (BTS) has been installed at the K2 Base camp area of Concordia according to a report published Tuesday.
The spot has been named ‘Ali Sadpara’, in memory of a late mountaineer, who died during the winter mission of the world's most treacherous peak earlier this year. The Special Communication Organisation (SCO, a telecom service provider in both public and private sector in Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan region) took the responsibility of making the site operational to ensure communication facilities at the world’s second tallest peak K2 base camp, inaugurated by Prime Minister Imran Khan during his recent visit to Gilgit-Baltistan.
The mobile coverage along with the internet access will play a pivotal role for mountaineers and trekking groups to stay connected with their families in emergencies. It will also be of great help in promoting adventure tourism and weather monitoring.
