Jalalpur Irrigation Project: A Step Foward to Better Pakistan.

PM Imran Khan will inaugurate 32.7 billion worth Jalal Pur Irrigation Project on Thursday. The PM will visit Pinddadan Khan today for the inaugural of the project. CM Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar, Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry and senior Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Khan Tareen will attend the event.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) with a loan amounting to Rs32.7 billion will fund the project. The Jalalpur Irrigation Project (JIP) is located along the right bank of River Jhelum in Punjab, Pakistan. The project is expected to directly benefit over 200,000 rural people; mostly poor.

The proposed canal will originate from the left bank of Rasul Barrage and will be 115 kilometers long with a designed discharge of 1,350 cusecs. It will underpass the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2) and a culvert has already been provided for that.

Additionally, the canal will have a distribution system of 23 distributary channels, 10 minor canals and more than 780 hydraulic structures of various kinds.

More so, the project will

(i) Construct over 200 km new irrigation canals,

(ii) Introduce institutional reforms and establish farmers’ organizations (FOs), and

(iii) Build farmers’ capacity.

Also, the project will contribute to food security and economic growth and will alleviate rural poverty in the project area.

According to PTI leader Nazar Gondal, the idea of a canal at this site was first introduced during British rule in 1898. However, the concept of providing irrigation supplies to this area has been in consideration since 1930.
