NASA displayed its first electric experimental aircraft, X-57 “Maxwell” at its aeronautic lab in California deserts.
The plane has been under development since 2015 and still has to go through the process of taking its first flight over Edward Air Force Base. The design has been adapted from the Italian-made engine, Tecnam P2006T.
NASA is of the view that attachment of electric motors which are meant to start the plane makes it ready for public viewing. These attached motors are powered by lithium-ion batteries.
In order to give a demo to pilots and engineers, an advance stimulator has been developed. This will help them understand the experience of an electric aircraft flight.
This is the first plane to be developed in a period of two months.
This design has been developed with an aim to make the design easy enough for commercial manufacturers so that they can develop according to the government certificate.
Brent Cobleigh, the project manager said, “We’re focusing on things that can help the whole industry, not just one company.”
He also highlighted that electric motor systems are easy to maintain since they are lightweight and have internal combustion engines.

On discussing the plans of the first flight, he said, “Our target right now is to fly this airplane in late 2020”.
