New Bill Allows Leave of Paternity Leave of 3 Months and Maternity Leave of 6 Months

The new Paternity and Maternity Leave Bill passed has made six-months paid maternity leave and three-months paid paternity leave obligatory. More so employers have to grant this leave as a compulsion.

The law was proposed by PPP Senator Qurat ul Ain Marri. Both public and private establishments in the federal territory are going to adopt the proposed law. The majority of the votes were in favor of the proposed law. Now, the bill will be sent to National Assembly and for further debate and considerations.

The bills say, ” The employees of every establishment shall be provided six-month paid maternity and three-months paternity leave as and when applied by employees, separately from their leave account, commencing from the date as applied by the applicant in the application and supported by a medical certificate.”

Another important clause focused on the extension of the leave which was an extension of paternity leave for a month and maternity leave for three months. However, the extended leave will be unpaid.

The proposed law suggests that the relationship between the father and child is necessary and thus father has to be there by the side of the child in the early years without worrying about the workplace.

Marri mentioned that women in the senate are asked not to produce many children.

Minister for Economic Affairs Hammad Azhar strongly opposed the bill saying that women already get 90 days to leave and male employees can avail48 leaves in a year. He said that paternity leaves have to be lowered to 15 days since there was no need for so many leaves.

Senator Javaid Abbasi who laid the report before the committee revealed that this bill was important to many members.
