Aisha Farouqi, a foreign office spokesperson at a weekly briefing rejected the US idea of labeling CPEC was a debt trap. She said that the total debt of CPEC was $4.9 billion which was smaller than the total debt of the country.
“CPEC is a long-term project negotiated through a multi-layered process. It has helped Pakistan address development gaps in energy, infrastructure, industrialization, and job creation,” she added.
She clearly said that it was a step to gain ” enormous economic benefits for the people of Pakistan and social-economic development”. She also said that this project was a top priority project and thus transparency of the project is being maintained through CPEC authority managing the project.
CPEX has created 10,00 new jobs in Pakistan. She further said, ” There are a number of projects financed through Chinese grants and concessional loans. To claim that CPEC is always in the form of loans or other forms of financing, often non-concessional with sovereign guarantees is not based on facts. The total CPEC debt is about $4.9 billion which is not even 10% of our total debt.”
