Rehman Malik passes away at 70

Today, we all woke up to the news of the unfortunate demise of Rehman Malik, an important name in Pakistani politics.

Rehman Malik, born in Sialkot on the 12th of December 1951 has had several governmental roles assigned to him in the past even being a senior Federal Investigating Agency (FIA) officer and also the interior minister from 2008 till 2013. He graduated, from the University of Karachi in 1973 and also happened to be one of the most senior members of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Speaking of some of his achievements, he was awarded two of the most high-ranking national awards of the country: the Sitara-e- Shujaat, and Nishaan-e-Imtiaz for his services.

Riaz Turi, the spokesman of Rehman Malik confirmed his demise through a tweet on Wednesday, the 23rd of February, 2022 at 3:35 am. Rehman Malik had contracted coronavirus, earlier in January after which his health continued to worsen until February 1, when he was ultimately put on the ventilator. After almost 20 days of extreme suffering, we lost him to the deadly virus.

In the words of Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chairman of PPP- “he was a very hardworking and capable interior minister”. Several political figures have paid tribute to him, including the interior minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed and senior leader of Pakistan Muslim League-(N) Ahsan Iqbal. Following his demise, several tweets have been pouring in paying condolences to his family with support and love.

The nation, lost yet another experienced politician, to this virus today. According to Rehman Malik’s nephew, his Namaz-e Janazah will be held on the 24th of February at 2:30 pm in H-8’s Mosque, in Islamabad.
