Russia Passed a Referendum Allowing Putin to rule till 2036!

On Wednesday last week, Russian public voted in favor of country wide referendum on constitutional amendments. As per the referendum, the now Russian President Vladimir Putin will rule the country till 2036.

The referendum seeks amendments in Russia’s 1993 Constitution, which will include protecting the institution of marriage, setting children as a priority of Russia’s domestic policy and an obligation to support and protect Russia’s culture.

The amendments also include a limit of two consecutive six-year terms for the president of the Russian Federation. The provision applies to the president at the time the legal changes enter into force, not taking into account the number of terms previously served in this position, thus paving the way for President Vladimir Putin to run again after his current term ends in 2024, Sputnik reported.

Official results published on Thursday, after 99.9% of ballots had been counted, showed that the former KGB officer who has ruled Russia for more than 20 years as president or prime minister had won the right to run for two more six-year terms after the current one ends in 2024.

That means Putin, 67, could rule until the age of 83.

The Central Election Commission said 77.9 percent of votes counted across the world’s largest country had supported changing the constitution. About 21 percent had voted against, it said.

The referendum had originally been scheduled for April 22 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Russia is among the countries hardest-hit by the virus.

Previously, as per the Russian constitution, Putin was due to step down in 2024.
