Lahore Zoo Kills Two White Lion Cubs

A viral infection claimed the lives of two rare white lion cubs at Lahore zoo on Thursday.

A white African lioness, three months back, gave birth to the three cubs. Out of these three cubs, one died right after the birth due to weakness. While the two others were kept under special care.

The veterinarian of the zoo said that the cubs were properly vaccinated and special attention was paid to their diet. However, the remaining two cubs also lost their lives to a viral infection at the pre-mature age of three months.

After the loss of the two cubs, the population of the African white lions in the Lahore zoo stands at eight.

The white lions have seen a halt in their reproduction worldwide and have become a rare species.

However, last year, the white lioness in the Vehari Zoo gave birth to healthy twin cubs. Mian Munir Ahmed, district wildlife officer (DWO) confirmed the news of the birth of the cubs and ensured that they are in good health. The lioness has reproduced after a span of 12 years.
